Alts and Respecs in AoC
Some more quotes dug up from Funcom's forums, developer Athelan writes:

I'm pretty sure you can respec feats."In my understanding of this, if you create a character and at level 5 you choose the Archetype as a Mage and at level 20 you branch off further as a Necromancer... And maybe around level 25 or so you realize you don't like being a Necromancer. You can then create a new level 20 Mage Archetype character and choose Herald of Xotli, Demonologist or Lich right away rather than starting over from scratch. If you want something completely different like a Rogue, you'd have to start from the very beginning again.
Feats (Age of Conan's name for abilities / powers) are chosen separately, some as a subset for your class (IE: stealth improvements for an Assassin) and some globally for all classes (IE: stealth detection). For players accustomed to WoW, respec'ing feats would be similar to talent respecs.
For reference, the main Archetypes are Rogue, Priest, Soldier and Mage. Each of those Archetypes branch off into further specializations. A convenient full chart of classes is listed within the Age of Conan article on Wilkipedia.

thats an interesting way to do it. Really, it makes sence, the easiest choice is prolly what archetype you want to play.
i belive they have also said you only have to do 1-5 once as well? so if you went with Necromancer and then decided you want to play a rogue class instead, you could start at lvl 5 since all characters are pretty much the same lvl 1-5. lvl 5 is when you pick your archetype.
