Caster or Melee?
Simple question:
Which archetype do you prefer? Melee or Caster?
I suppose it could be taken deeper with the whole Tank, Heal, DPS, Crowd-Control paradigm, but that could get really specific with pet classes etc..
For me, it's usually been Melee, but I've warmed up to Casters lately.

I always want to say melee and try to convince myself, but something draws me back to some form of caster or ranged combat in every game that I play. I always alt a melee though.

Ranged but not caster.

Problem is, most games that have a definitive caster or melee archetypes, tend to have them on the spectrum ends. Generally speaking, the melee class difficulty is easy in the beginning and requires certain planning for viability at the endgame or partnership to compensate for shortcomings. Casters on the other hand, have a need for a 'meat shield' to protect them until they have the required spells to compensate for their shortcomings in close up. Those game that have tried to make hybrids of the two main (rogues and priests), end up being overwhelming/underwhelming in their implementation.
It really is a matter of play style when it comes to choosing what class you may prefer over the other. As there will be no happy mediums (like in life), that would be satisfactory to the general player.

I know you didn't want to get specific, but ...
Melee DPS or ranged healer. :)
Ranged casting & ranged DPS, I tend to find boring. It feels more like "stand over here and mash buttons". (I know, I know, there's way more than that...)

I have a 70 rogue and after doing the battle grounds for a couple weeks see how advantageous a ranged dps can be. As a rogue I could stay stealthed and farm honor while others die, but I'm not a tool. Seems like a casters can stand back and attack and rack up honor. Also a warrior stays alive longer and always seems to get the most honorable kills. But its too close to a rogue to make a new character. I know different but ss, ss, ss, evicerate is close to heroic, hamstring mombo jumbo.
Looking at a mage to bring me into the new expansion with their new talents should be fun.
thats my 2 cents

For me, it's all about responsive gameplay. I've found that, at least in WoW, the semi-realtime fighting has felt more responsive on casters than in melee to me. Swing timers really, really frustrate me on melee characters.

@Llew: I found that as well with WoW and again now the same situation with WAR, where so far I find the melee swinging feels kinda spongy. For melee, without the casting bars, the best indicator are the animations and I always found WoW's animations subpar (to be fair, they were better than the rest for MMORPGs, but subpar for a game overall IMHO).
WAR's animations are not as good as WoW's even, so here I am again shunning melee.
